Actiq Lollipop

Actiq Lollipop - Actiq Lozenges - Actiq Side Effects.

Actiq (fentanyl citrate) is manufactured by Cephalon, Inc.  Actiq is an extremely powerful narcotic similar to the Duragesic patch. Both Duragesic and Actiq use the drug Fentanyl however the similarities end there. Duragesic uses a transdermal patch to deliver it's narcotic payload and Actiq uses a transmucal delivery system in the form of a lozenge which is placed on the end of a stick and resembles a lollipop. When the narcotic lollipop is placed against the cheek of the mouth and sucked on, the medication is delivered directly into the blood stream.  It usually provides relief of even the most severe pain within 10 or 15 minutes.

Actiq was approved by the FDA in November 1998 for treatment in cancer patients suffering pain which could not be relieved by other medications.  Although it has only been approved for use by cancer patients, the manufacturer negligently allowed the medication to be prescribed “off-label” to treat less serious ailments, such as chronic back pain, knee pain and head aches.  It has been estimated that over 80% of Actiq users do not have cancer, and there have been allegations the sales representatives actively promoted the drug for non-cancer uses.

As a result of Actiq being prescribed for non-approved uses, serious and potentially fatal injuries have been caused.  Actiq related deaths have occurred as a result of "off-label" Actiq uses. There have also been reports of Actiq related deaths in children whom mistook the Actiq lozenge as a confectionary lollipop or candy. Other serious Actiq side effects and injuries have included respiratory distress and severe dehydration.

12/24/2006 - Actiq, a Utah-made painkiller, is called a blessing by many, but police and regulators warn of a possible dark side.

12/23/2006 - Actiq's rocket ride from pain to bliss can make it highly addictive, with a potential for abuse and even death, a trait it shares with other opioids such as OxyContin, methadone and endorphin. Although officials at Utah drug-abuse treatment centers say they are not seeing addictions locally, addicts can be found easily in certain Internet discussion groups.
